THE STORY OF THE BLACK HORSE
Searching the history books it looks likely that the pub gained its name in the late 1730's when Highwayman, Dick Turpin was still riding from York to London. At the time Kirkby Fleetham was known as Kirkby Fleton and was home to Captain Asquith, whose daughter ran off with 'Dick Turpin' or more likely a local highwayman! Anyway, he helped her leave by lifting her from her bedroom window (she lived in the village public house possibly named 'The Salutation') onto his black stallion and away they went! Therefore legend has it we became the Black Horse ....
